Dr. Israel Charny, Executive Director of the Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem, Israel and Editor in Chief of the newly published Encyclopedia of Genocide will visit the Eastern United States and Canada February 26 to March 9 for a whirlwind book and lecture tour at several universities and the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. The distinguished Israeli scholar will address key issues related to genocide, including the need to stand up to denials and the deniers of the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide and other genocides, the study of Genocide and Holocaust - learning to care about the value of life and the necessity of preserving a genuine sense of tragedy and moral outrage about the Holocaust and all genocides.
As Editor in Chief of the Encyclopedia of Genocide, he brings to the field of genocide studies the vision of both a humanitarian and a scholar who seeks to provide, through a comprehensive exposition of the history of genocide, both as a process and as distinct events, an understanding that seeks to guide humankind through a troubled history to a time when genocide and mass violence can be prevented. The Encyclopedia is now a unique and important new reference tool on the subject. While emphasizing the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust it includes extensive treatment of all known genocides and other crimes against humanity and will remain the premier reference tool for years to come.
Professor Charny, a clinical psychologist by training, is Professor of Psychology and Family Therapy at Hebrew University. He is widely respected and credited as one of the prime movers in the development of the field of Comparative Genocide Studies. Dr. Charny has been especially credited for his resistance to those who sought to minimize the significance of the the Armenian genocide and other past genocides. He is committed to the ideal that understanding the processes that contribute to the genocide of all peoples will better educate us all and will help to prevent genocides in the future.
