Our website is now available
in
over 20 languages (January
5, 2004)
As of January 5,, 2004 the www.preventgenocide.org
website is available in over twenty languages. This development
is a continuation of an effort which began on on July 1, 1999, when
in addition to English,
we added French,
German
and Spanish
sections to the website. During the year 2000, we added Danish,
Italian, Japanese
and Russian
entry pages. In 2001 we have made our site available in Arabic , Chinese
and Korean through automated translation pages at www.ajeeb.com
(Arabic) and www.babelfish.altavista.com
(Chinese and Korean).
In early 2002 we added an entry page and section of
the website in Kinyarwanda
which received over 1,700 visitors during 2002, and had received over
2,750 visitors during 2003. Also during 2002 we added sections of
the website in Hungarian,
Latvian and
Lithuanian
. During 2003 we have added an entry page and website sections Norwegian,
Polish and
Ukrainian.
Please help us to revise and improve these pages if you are able to
do so.
If you can help us to correct and revise
draft entry pages in Bahasa
Indonesian, Portuguese
, KisSwahili and Swedish
your efforts will help readers in these languages to understand the
issue of genocide.
Where there is a separate language entry page on the
website, we try to provide viewers with links and navigational aids
in the language of that section. There are also cross links among
the sections so viewers can readily move from items in one language
to the parallel items in other languages.
Lastly our website includes the basic
legal definition of genocide in the following languages: Albanian,
Arabic,
Croatian,
Danish,
Dutch,
Esperanto,
Estonian,
Finnish,
Georgian,
Greek,
Hebrew,
Korean, Serbian
(Latin), Shona,
Turkish
. Our website also makes the text of the U.N. Genocide Convention
available in 30
languages and The Rome Statute of the International Criminal
Court in 23
languages. In addition to
these international documents the website has domestic
laws in from 70 countries and a guide to the the
word "genocide" translated or defined in 70 languages.
Present Plans
Visitors to our website have told us how difficult
it sometimes can be to find information on the Internet for those
with limited knowledge of the English language. An Argentinean student
wrote us: "Estamos en un mundo tan globalizado que el que no
sabe ingles esta perdido, y eso esta realmente mal" (We
are in such a globalized world that someone who does not know English
is lost, and this is a very bad thing"). Prevent Genocide
International is committed to providing information on the prevention
of genocide to the global public through the medium of the Internet.
Thanks to our volunteers
The effort to create the pages on our website, from
design to translation, is the work of volunteers. Volunteers contribute
their time and talent as "virtual volunteers" working via the Internet.
Our volunteers are busy people, but make time for this important project.
We need your
help

and other tasks, please contact our office. You need not live near
our office, but can coordinate your work with our local staff via
the Internet. Write to: info@preventgenocide.org
Please consider how your talents can help us expand
and improve this website and build our organizational network. We
need your help.
